How to Do a Simple Ganesh Puja at Home
Lord Ganesha is the god of new beginnings. We pray to him before starting anything important because he is the Remover of Obstacles.
With Ganesh Puja coming up, it is the perfect time to honor him. You can perform a simple puja at home, or if you wish to conduct a full ceremony, you can book a special Ganesh Chaturthi Puja with our expert pandits.
Why Do We Pray to Ganesha First?
Have you ever wondered why Ganesha is always worshipped first? The story is very special.
Goddess Parvati wanted a loyal son, so she created a boy from turmeric paste and brought him to life. She told him to guard her door. When Lord Shiva came home, the boy did not know him and stopped him from entering. This led to a great fight.
To fix the tragic mistake, Lord Shiva gave the boy the head of an elephant and brought him back to life. He named him Ganesha and gave him a special blessing: everyone must pray to Ganesha before any other god. This is why the Ganesh Puja is always the first one we do.
A Key Shloka for Your Puja
You can use this famous Ganesha shloka to start your puja.
In Devanagari:
वक्रतुण्ड महाकाय सूर्यकोटि समप्रभ । निर्विघ्नं कुरु मे देव सर्वकार्येषु सर्वदा ॥
How to Pronounce It:
Vakratunda Mahakaya, Surya Koti Samaprabha Nirvighnam Kuru Me Deva, Sarva-Kaaryeshu Sarvada
What It Means: "O Lord with the curved trunk and a big body, who shines like a million suns, please remove all obstacles from my work, always."
How to Do Ganesh Puja at Home: 5 Easy Steps
Step 1: Clean Your Space: First, clean the area where you will pray. Take a bath and wear clean clothes. This makes the space feel calm and ready for prayer.
Step 2: Gather Your Puja Items: You will need a few simple things. This is your puja items list:
An idol or photo of Lord Ganesha
A lamp (diya)
Incense sticks (agarbatti)
A flower (he loves red flowers)
A fruit
A simple sweet (like sugar or a laddoo)
Step 3: Invite Lord Ganesha: Place the Ganesha idol on a small, clean cloth. Light the lamp and incense. Close your eyes, fold your hands, and chant the shloka above. Ask Ganesha to come and accept your prayer.
Step 4: Make Your Offerings: Offer the flower, fruit, and sweet to the idol. As you offer each item, you can say the simple mantra: "Om Gam Ganapataye Namah."
Step 5: Finish with Aarti and Prayer: Gently wave the lit lamp in a circle in front of the idol. This is called Aarti. After, sit quietly for a moment and ask for his blessings. You can now share the sweet offering (prasad) with your family.
